Arvind Joshi, his father, a veteran Gujrati theatre artist was well-renowned for his great work and contribution. Sarita Joshi, who is Sharman’s aunt has also acted in Marathi and Gujrati theatre. Not to forget, the very well-known faces of the Indian entertainment industry, actress Manasi Joshi Roy and actor Rohit Roy, are also related to Sharman as his sister and brother-in-law. Though born in Nagpur, Sharman pursued his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Karachi, and eventually he shifted to Bengaluru, where he pursued his filmmaking career.
Sharman Joshi has worked in various plays and theatre performances, in English, Marathi, Hindi and Gujrati languages as an eminent actor, producer and even a director. In one of the very popular plays of Gujrati theatre art, called “All the Best”, Sharman Joshi played the character of a deaf person. This play was a big hit with over 550 shows in 3 years and his role had been highly acclaimed. Among his most popular comedy plays is “Ame Layi Gaya, Tame Rahi Gaya”. Sharman had played 4 different roles in this play. In the year 2016, Sharman Joshi entered the direction of films, with his directorial debut “Main aur Tum” which was a romantic comedy in Hindi. Sharman Joshi himself worked in this film, featuring as the lead actor alongside co-star Tejashree Pradhan.
As his debut movie was “Godmother” an art film, not many know about it, but Sharman Joshi gained a lot of popularity from the well-known producer N Chandra’s film, “Style”, that was released in the year 2001. Subsequently, Sharman Joshi was seen in the film “Xcuse Me”, released in the year 2003 and “Shaadi No.1”, that was released in the year 2005.
Sharman Joshi’s first breakthrough in the Hindi films came in the year 2006, when he bagged a role in the superhit film “Rang De Basanti”. In the same year, he gave another superhit film, “Golmaal”, playing the role of “Laxman”, which was again a very well-acclaimed role truly loved by his audience. In the year 2007, Sharman Joshi appeared in critically acclaimed roles in films like “Life in a Metro”, “Dhol” and “Raqeeb”. The next year 2008, Sharman Joshi was seen in the movies like “Hello” which was inspired by the novel One Night @ the Call Center by Chetan Bhagat, and “Sorry Bhai” in the lead role.
All the films apart, but one of Sharman Joshi’s most unforgettable roles has been of ‘Raju Rastogi’ which was one of the three lead characters in the movie “3 Idiots” inspired by the novel “Five Point Someone” written by renowned Indian contemporary author Chetan Bhagat.
Sharman even played the role of a policeman in “Wajah Tum Ho”, an erotic thriller film, and in the lead role in the film “Kaashi – in Search of Ganga” and “3 Storeys”. Sharman has been seen in a lead role in his digital debut in “Baarish” produced under the Balaji Telefilms banner in 2019 opposite to Asha Negi. Not just that, in the year 2009, Sharman Joshi hosted a game show “PokerFace: Dil Sachcha Chehra Jhootha”, which was inspired by the British show called “PokerFace”. Sharman Joshi has even been awarded a lifetime membership of the International Film and Television Club of Asian Academy of Film & Television.
