Alia Bhatt is a famous Bollywood actress who was born on 15 March 1993 to the family of a very popular Indian movie director Mahesh Bhatt. Her mother, Soni Razdan, is also an actress. Her father is a Gujarati while her mother is a descendant of British German and Kashmiri pandit. Due to this, Alia holds British citizenship. Alia also has an elder sister named Shaheen Bhatt. She has two half-siblings, Rahul Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt. Alia is also related to the popular actor Emraan Hashmi and the movie director Mohit Suri through her father; they are her paternal cousins.
She studied at the Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai but dropped out from it before completing her 12th to pursue acting. Alia confessed that she wanted to become an actress from a very young age and she got this realisation during a rehearsal in kindergarten. At the age of five, she played the younger version of Preity Zinta’s character in the movie Sangharsh in 1999 and this ignited her love for acting. She also took dance lessons at Shiamak Davar's institute.
Alia started her acting journey in the Bollywood industry with the 2012 Karan Johar movie Student of the Year alongside Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. This was her debut movie which helped her in establishing herself in the film industry. The film turned out to be a commercial success and gave break to all three of them.
After her debut in Student of the Year, Alia Bhatt got criticised a bit for her acting. Disappointed a little, she wanted to play a better role to prove herself to the audience. She got this opportunity in Imtiaz Ali’s film Highway and earned huge appreciation for her performance. Though the film failed to perform as per expectations, Alia won Filmfare Critics Award in the Best Actress category for her outstanding performance in the movie.
Later in 2014, she got an amazing chance to be featured in two very popular Bollywood movies namely, 2 States and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. In 2 States, she played the role of a Tamil girl very elegantly and gracefully. In Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, she portrayed a Punjabi girl with all the craziness and fun. These two varied roles have helped her in gaining high appreciation from the audience and establish her career in the Bollywood film industry.
In 2015, she was cast in Shaandaar opposite Shahid Kapoor. In this movie, their insomniac characters fall in love with each other at a destination wedding. Alia was criticised for her not-so-engaging role in the movie and the film did not turn out to be a commercial success. In 2016, she appeared in a supporting role in the movie Kapoor & Sons alongside Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra. This movie performed successfully at the box office.
Later in 2016, she got featured in a crime drama named Udta Punjab opposite Shahid Kapoor. She portrayed a Bihari girl and was highly appreciated for her performance in the film. This was an intense role and she marked a departure from the light-hearted roles she has played earlier. Because of some abusive scenes, the movie got into controversies and the Central Board of Film Certification deemed that it portrays a negative image of Punjab. The Board demanded extensive censorship of the film before releasing it. But later, the Bombay High Court cleared the movie with only one scene cut. In the same year, she also portrayed a troubled girl who consults with a therapist, played by Shah Rukh Khan, in the movie Dear Zindagi. This movie gained huge attention towards Alia’s performance and she was highly appreciated for her role in the movie.
In 2017, she again collaborated with Varun Dhawan for the romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania. She was highly recognised for her chemistry with Varun and the amazing representation of her role. In 2018, she was cast as a Kashmiri spy who married a Pakistani army officer portrayed by Vicky Kaushal in the thriller Raazi. In this movie, Alia won many hearts with her fabulous performance and the movie turned out to be one of the highest-grossing female-led Hindi films.
By this time, Alia had become a popular and well-loved Bollywood actress. In 2019 she was cast in a musical movie, Gully Boy, opposite Ranveer Singh. This film was inspired by two street rappers Divine and Naezy. It turned out to be a great success and got premiered at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival.
The biggest-budget movie of Alia Bhatt, Kalank, was released in 2019. The movie was set in the timeline before the partition of India and featured Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, and Madhuri Dixit. As Alia’s role required her to be fluent in Urdu, she watched famous Indian classic movies like Mughal-e-Azam and Umrao Jaan to learn the dialect and body language.
In 2020, she starred in Sadak 2, a sequel to the 1991 film Sadak. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the movie was released on Disney+ Hotstar. The film got many negative reviews because of the nepotism controversy caused by Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. People consider Alia to be one of the many beneficiaries of nepotism and thus the movie failed to perform well in the industry.
In the year 2022, she played the role of a prostitute in the crime drama Gangubai Kathiawadi. Her performance in the movie was highly appreciated and loved by the audience. The movie got premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival. In the same year, she also played a brief role in the Telugu movie RRR alongside N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan.
